I can't believe I have never started at this spot before.  Jim told me he use to hike this trail at work.  It is so close to work  how did I miss this all these years.  The small trailhead parking lot is at 32nd street and Lincoln Dr. To the East before the gated housing complex.  It was filled this sunny morning so I parked across the street in the shopping plaza that has a starbucks.

We started later than usual at 8 am but it was beautiful, sunny and not hot at all.

We quickly headed up the trail.  There is a left that you can head up the hill through switchbacks to a short butt busters.  We were looking for a little over 2 miles because I needed my handyman Jim to help with hanging new curtains.

This trail was quite busy but nothing like the summit or other areas.  Lots of dogs.  Lots of families.  Nice hike that is an alternative to Camelback or Piestewa and perfect for kids.

Not too much to say.  We hit the summit and went up another hill for a bit. We sat and enjoyed the view and then headed back.

Great Hike!

I will come do this after work before it gets too hot!

Hike #19 - San Tan Regional Park Queen Creek AZ

Hike #19

Location: Queen Creek AZ
Distance: 4 miles

Time: 1 hour 30 minutes

One of the few areas that I have not been to.  It is a bit of a drive but looking for new hikes so off we go!

Jim and I headed out with the intention to do the North West part of the area.  We parked at the Goldmine parking area with off Ellsworth to W Hunt Hwy to Wagon Wheel.  There is a big lot.  If you park in the lot you pay $6 and if you park on the street you pay $2.  We parked in the street and paid $6.  I read the rules on the ticket after we paid. Donation!!

The plan is to take Dynamite to the end which is 2.4 miles and return the same way.  I read about the Goldmine trail which is also accessible to make a loop but it had a part that people said was very steep.

We took off up Goldmine and took a right onto Dynamite.  Lots of bikers but they spread out quickly.  The trail is perfect for them. Very wild and well groomed.  Beautiful views in all areas except today is was a little windy and overcast slightly so the smog and dust distorted our clear views.

Perfect day.  The trail is a very gradual incline.

We made it to the end of Dynamite quickly and kept going around the corner because my GPS was slightly off and we thought we would get more distance.

View to the South

Switchback signs.  Kinda cute.  Glad the Grand Canyon does not have these.  I think they are really for the bikers.

View to the South East. Very Pretty.
We hit the San Tan trail that leads up the Goldmine.  I warned Jim that I read about the Goldmine trail being a little steep.  He said Go for it.  He had his poles.  We headed that way and came upon two lady bikers coming straight at us.  The path was huge but they decided to stay on our path, never said a word and came straight at us.  THROW DOWN time.  LOL  Hikers don't like rude bikers.  We talked about them under our breathe.  All good. We are hitting the hill.
We headed up the hill.  Similar to Shaw butte. Loose rock and a good incline.  It was a well travelled trail.  People had come up it from the other park entrance.

View South from MidPoint on Goldmine heading North.

Jim lapped the ladies!
We made it to fake top where there was a bench.  We caught our breath, confirmed if we continued up we would get back down towards the other trailhead.  There were a couple of nice woman chit chatting with us - non biker.

We went up and then saw the steep part.  I would say the problem is the loose rock not necessarily that is is so steep.  It is one of the paths that you have to have your footing or you may slide or slip.

We headed down carefully and soon was back on normal trail paths.

We saw the cemetery to the left that I had read about. Mansel Carter & Marion Kennedy are buried here.

Here is a link to the two men buried in the grave.

We stopped and read their tombstones.  Pretty cool.  Back to the car and we were done.  It was a nice hike.  Too far for me unless I am working down in that area and have time.  I am glad I can finally check that area off my list.

Stop at QT and Jim and I are happy hikers!

Hike #18 Pine Creek Loop to Ballantine Trail, Sunflower AZ

Hike #18

Date: April 4th
Hikers: Me & Jim

Location: SunFlower AZ
Distance: 4 miles
Rating: Easy/Moderate (North loop easy, South loop moderate)
Time: 1 hour 30 minutes

History Link:http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/tonto/recreation/hiking/recarea/?recid=35447&actid=50

I have had Ballantine Trail on my list for two years.  I read about it in Arizona Highways.  Great for spring flower hike.  This is so easy to get to.  There are several more trails in this area.  Will find the others for future hikes.

Headed to Fountain Hills from Shea and hit AZ87.  Head North on AZ87 to mile marker 210.7. It is 8 miles south of SunFlower.  The trailhead parking is marked from the road.  The area is small. No water or facilities.
Jim and I are alone on our hike today.  Looking forward to the hike.  It was breezy in Fountain Hills where we met but no breeze at all at the Trailhead.  My research told me that Pine Creek is a loop and at the mid point you can pick up Ballantine.  We chose the North route because the other route was noted as a butt buster.  We chose the easier way.

Beautiful Cactus on the North side of this hike.

The view to the North is beautiful!

Lots of wild flowers.  There was water in the wash below us as we climbed up the hill.  The foliage was overgrown on the trail.  We passed three people on the way up. We saw two more people on the loop back and that was it.  Great hike with NO people. :)

Half way point on the Pine Creek Loop. 1.5 miles.  We headed on the Ballantine trail.  Our plan was to go up the Boulder Flat as far as we wanted and then turn around. We went about another .5 mile and then stopped.  The terrain quickly changed to boulders.  It was awesome!

Our Turn Around Spot!

This is definitely a hike to come back to and go all the way to the Flat.

There were lots of lizard running across the trail today.  They were bigger than I usually see.  Of course that makes me scream occasionally.

Hike #18Done!
Happy Easter!
